(Diagram of Tenshudai(donjon base) of Edo Castle)The castle tower, burned down in the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657, was never rebuilt, but its foundation was rebuilt in the year after the great fire, in 1658, by the Maeda family of the Kaga Domain. However, in 1659, the shogun's assistant, Hoshina Masayuki asserted that it was a waste of money and labor to restore the castle tower, when all it was used for was to keep a lookout. This led to the shogunate's decision not to rebuild it. This is the diagram that was used in the construction work to scale down the foundation in the final days of the shogunate.」
